In the cultural landscape of the United States, one finds a recurrent emblem—the American flag. This symbol, recognized worldwide, carries an array of meanings. As an immigrant, I found myself intrigued by the nuances it possesses. Over the span of a decade, I have been documenting its various appearances and narratives.
My photo series, "Flag: Encountering America," traverses the length and breadth of the United States. It presents the numerous contexts in which the American flag appears and the multitude of interpretations it carries for individuals from various backgrounds. Whether in its confident fluttering against the sky, its respectful posture at half-mast, its presence in civil rights demonstrations, political gatherings, or even as a marketing tool - this essay captures a dynamic assortment of its uses and the emotions they evoke.
However, throughout this journey across the country, I noticed a shift in the flag's role. While it was once almost universally recognized as a unifying symbol, it has also begun to assume divisive undertones. For some, the flag carries negative connotations, while for others, it has become a device to advance their own interests. Acknowledging this, I aimed to reflect both the positive and the contentious aspects of the flag through my photography, aiming to encourage reflection on the flag's complex role in society.
With this project, my goal is to foster a discussion on patriotism, nationalism, and the contemporary relevance of the American flag. I hope to prompt individuals to reflect on their personal interpretation of the flag and how it can both unite and divide. The American flag, in its ubiquity, mirrors the diverse perspectives of the nation, and it is up to each of us to shape and understand its representation in accordance with our collective values and goals.
